North West follows Sheffield's lead in advancing pupil participation levels. Liverpool-based education and technology specialist MGL has established a partnership with The Xoolon Sports and Fitness Academy to promote sports participation and healthy living for youngsters across the North West. Over the next six months over 50,000 school students ranging from age 10 to 16 will enter the online academy with an aim to providing focus and support in developing a healthy lifestyle and sporting excellence.

A new dynamic web-based sports portal "sportal" aimed at tackling the ticking time bomb of poor health and fitness levels among youngsters has been launched. The Xoolon Sports and Fitness Academy appeals directly to the Playstation generation of 10 to 16 year olds by being fun and easy to use, encouraging sporting competition which can be real or virtual and either school-based or purely for self-improvement. Critical to Xoolon's appeal is that it operates fully within the technology platforms which are second nature to this age group.

The Xoolon Sports and Fitness Academy has been developed over three years by experienced educationalists and sports psychologists and, having been successfully trialled in schools in Bristol and Edinburgh, is now available nationally. Sheffield is the first authority to commit across its area, bringing the package to all of its 24 secondary and 160 feeder primary settings.
