The MGL tie-in follows a recent agreement with Sheffield LEA Partnership Development Managers to introduce the revolutionary on-line sports portal – or ‘sportal’ - to all school pupils in Sheffield.

Xoolon brings all of the personal development and social inclusion benefits which involvement in sport has for students and, by making PE fun again, helps to reverse the decline in fitness levels of young people.  With almost daily news coverage of the rise in childhood obesity and Prime Minister Gordon Brown calling for “two million more active people by 2012”, Xoolon appeals to the ‘Playstation generation’ by being fun and easy to use.

IT-savvy youths access the sophisticated Xoolometer to record their progress across a number of performance criteria, either via PC – potentially during IT lessons – or through mobile phones.  It evaluates pupils’ key mental and physical strengths and identifies those sports most suited to each individual.  All pupils – beginners, gifted & talented, fit and unfit - are inspired to greater participation through the Xoolometer. The Xoolon Sports and Fitness Academy has been developed over three years by experienced educationalists and sports psychologists and, having been successfully trialled in schools in Bristol and Edinburgh, is now available nationally.  Sheffield was the first authority to commit across its area, bringing the package to all of its 24 secondary and 160 feeder primary settings.

Xoolon is also a valuable aid for teachers. The software complements the national schools curriculum and is compatible with all school management framework systems.  It supports sports and head teachers with time-saving performance assessment and reporting tools and helps to identify both highly talented performers as well as those who are under-performing.  The Xoolon Academy solution meets fully the demands of the Virtual Learning Environments being introduced to all schools.

User benefits do not stop at the school gates – Xoolon links to sports clubs for extra-curricular achievement assessment and engages parents who often bemoan the inadequacies of the once-a year feedback of the parents evening.

In order to encourage early take-up of sports activities, the Xoolon Academy is completely free-of-charge to all primary schools.  Secondary schools pay a one off fee of only £499, though this has been reduced to £350 for academic year 2007 / 08.

MGL Director, Carl Gilbertson said “We are delighted to have formed this partnership and consider it an exciting opportunity for young people across the region. For a long time we have recognised the ability of technology to grasp young people’s attention whilst at the same time recognising that the general health and fitness of youngsters maybe impacted upon. Hopefully, the Academy will forge the link between computers and sport and therefore encourage greater participation from young people”

From athletics to water skiing, Xoolon provides youngsters with the inspiration and impetus to turn lethargy into liveliness through active involvement in sport.
